Quick or premature ejaculation is one of the sexual dysfunction that occurs when a man has an orgasm and ejaculates sooner than he or his partner would like. It often happens before or shortly after penetration during intercourse. This problem could lead to a frustrating experience for both partners.
It has been a sensitive and often embarrassing topic to some people. While it is a common issue, few people are willing to discuss it openly. However, it is essential to address the underlying factors that contribute to this problem.
Findings have shown that most men engage in alcohol and drugs like tramadol, cannabis, cocaine and the likes, to enable them to last long during sexual intercourse, which most often is to the detriment of both or one partner. Hence, experts have said that unhealthy diets are the architect of quick ejaculation.
“This thing called quick ejaculation is subjective to the couple involved, in the sense that, is the partners that will determine whether it is quick or not, however, a medically acclaimed quick ejaculation is a situation where a man achieves erection but could not penetrate the woman’s vagina before the semen pours on the vulva,” Dr. Emmanuel Isuaja of Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, stated during an interview with THE WHISTLER.
He added that such a situation poses a threat to men’s ability to impregnate their wives.
He further clarified that any sexual intercourse that the penetration stayed for 3 mins and above is not a quick ejaculation.
Isuaja noted that most times what people term quick ejaculation normally isn’t a problem adding that sometimes it is just the people’s attitude that is the problem.
While the exact cause of quick ejaculation cannot be pinned on a particular thing, Isuaja however, highlighted excessive alcohol intake, sugar, stress and attitudes towards sex as the most common underlying issues of quick ejaculation.
He also mentioned other situations that lead to quick ejaculation as a medical condition such as type 2 diabetes, prostate problems, thyroid problems, anxiety, recreational drugs and body image difficulties.
He explained that sex naturally demands energy, stating that one needs to feed well before engaging in sex.
“For instance,” he said, “if one is diabetic, there is a need to take one’s drug. There is a need to optimize the control of those sugars, so if it is optimized and the sugars are well utilized into energy, one will not have issues. But for someone who is into sugars that cannot properly utilize beyond the handling of his own body, then instead of giving energy, the sugars will give weakness, and the energy required will not be met. The brain will interpret it and it will lead to early ejaculation to save the life of the man.”
Speaking on attitudes towards sex, Isuaja, who noted that sex is a thing of the mind involving both partners, criticized female attitudes of always telling the man to his face that he is too quick to release, or even having a stopwatch with her to show the man how long he lasts.
“I do tell my client that if the man is not lasting long and you continue to tell him to his face that he is not lasting long, the man will never last long because, before the intercourse he has already started thinking on how not to release quickly. Believe me, when there is competition or debate over release, the sensors are more likely to be switched on and the man will release and the same story continues,” he explained.
This attitude, he said, plus many other factors lead to stress contributing to premature ejaculation by disrupting the body’s natural processes, leading to heightened anxiety and potentially causing the nerves to become overstimulated, leading to an early climax.
He added that some early ejaculation could also occur if the man does not give adequate romance and sexual arousal, and recommended that couples should be counseled on proper sexual arousal and romance before sex.
Speaking further the medical doctor attributed the influence of alcohol on quick ejaculation to the quantity consumed.
Isuaja stressed that alcohol when taken in small quantities behaves differently than when taken in large quantities, and alcohol that made a man desire sex in small quantities may turn off the desire in large quantities.
He added that the issue of ejaculation is also dependent on the quantity or dosage of alcohol and on the person as some persons are alcohol tolerance while others are not.
The doctor also emphasised on the effect of alcohol on the liver, where he said that chronic alcoholic consumption can affect the liver in a way that it can no longer handle testosterone and other conversion thereby leading to early ejaculation.
He added that most men who take drugs to last long are also risking their kidneys and livers.
Also speaking, a general medical practitioner and Human Anatomy lecturer at Enugu State University Teaching Hospital, Parklane, Dr. Christian Chiemeka, stated that both alcohol and sugar can contribute to premature ejaculation.
He noted that alcohol can interfere with sexual stimulation, while sugar can be part of an unhealthy diet that contributes to weight gain.
Chiemeka further explained that excessive alcohol consumption can interfere with the signals between the brain and genitals, making it difficult to ejaculate or causing early ejaculation, lowers testosterone levels and sperm count, and shrinks the testes.
Elaborating more on the dangers of excessive alcohol consumption, he pointed out that it can still cause sexual dysfunction which premature ejaculation is one of them, low sexual desire and erectile dysfunction.
He added that the amount of alcohol consumed is the most significant predictor of developing sexual dysfunction.
Speaking further he said, excess sugar leads to some unhealthy diet that can contribute to weight gain, visceral fat, which is deposited from excess calories and sugar, is a risk factor for erectile dysfunction.
Nutrition guide for premature ejaculation
Quick ejaculation emerges from some underlying issues. Such issues must be addressed first to enable the correction of quick ejaculation through nutrition.
Focusing on nutrients that can help promote men’s sexual health and also correct hormonal imbalance, should be a priority because they are part of the things that trigger quick ejaculation, a Nutritionist and a healthy diet blogger, Uchechukwu Fortunate, said.
She however stated that some of these issues could be as a result of medical conditions adding that the only time to link it to nutrition is when is as a result of nutrient lack, or when there is any underlying medical condition that the person is on drug for, but needs diet therapy to fasten the healing.
Fortunate stated that though quick ejaculation can be corrected nutritionally, there is no particular food or one time food that can boost this sexual derive.
She however added that there are some compounds and nutrients in some food that can help correct and regulate the production of sperm and as well as the quality of the sperm.
The nutritionist added that foods that are rich in Zinc and vitamin D support testosterone production and also promote sperm count and quality.
Nutrients, she said, could be found in the foods like oysters (a very powerful food that corrects male issues).
Fortunate suggested that due to the high cost of oysters, one can opt for nuts and seeds like tiger nuts, chia seed, almonds, walnuts.
She added that meats like beef and chicken also have a reasonable amount of zinc.
Speaking further, she said omega 3 fatty acids are also found in fatty fishes like salmon, and it helps the heart in pumping blood to all parts of the body. This, she said, helps to increase sexual drive and prevent erectile dysfunction.
She added that tiger nut smoothie, a combination of banana, tiger nut, ginger, and date, helps in erectile function, stressing that when these foods are combined together, it does a perfect job for the sperm production and ejaculation.
However, Fortunate warned that sugar and preservatives attack the nerves and render the person weak, and as well affect the sperm production too.
She further encouraged that enough water is very necessary, reduction in overly processed food which she said most of them result in hormonal imbalance, stressing that all these weakens the reproductive organ.
She also added that avoiding sugar sweetened beverages, especially the ones that are high in caffeine is very important, noting that they encourage an upsurge of energy which can still render someone weak after a short while.
She also called for regular physical exercise.
Fortunate finally encouraged that one should see a physician for proper check up and guide whenever ejaculation becomes a problem.
