GAITHERSBURG, Md. (TCN) — A 39-year-old woman was arrested for allegedly drowning her infant daughter in the bathtub and planning to kill herself and the rest of her family.
On Sunday, Dec. 8, at 12:12 p.m., Mackenzie Colgan called the Montgomery County Emergency Communications Center and said she drowned her 3-month-old daughter while giving her a bath. Police and fire personnel responded to the home and transported the infant to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead after medical staff attempted more lifesaving efforts.
Major Crimes Unit detectives went to Colgan’s home and arrested her on a charge of first-degree murder.
According to court documents cited by WTOP-TV, Colgan gave the child a bath at around 11:40 a.m. After allegedly drowning her daughter, she planned to jump out of a second-floor window. She reportedly changed her mind while on a ledge and went downstairs at noon to inform the girl’s father that their daughter was dead. The father rushed to the bathroom and discovered his daughter in the tub, which still had water in it. He attempted CPR on her and told Colgan to call 911.
WTOP reports Colgan admitted to police that she held the girl’s head underwater until she knew she was dead. She allegedly said she wanted “end everything” by killing herself, her husband, and two children.
Court records show Colgan will undergo a competency evaluation.
