Today was a big one for fighting game fans with the shocking announcement of the Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection coming to take us all for a ride.
On top of including six classic Marvel fighters and The Punisher, the long-awaited collection also comes packing some nice features that not even most new games give players.
The big one that stood out to us the most was of course the inclusion of a hitbox / hurtbox viewer, which is great for learning games and especially characters.
Having hitboxes available in Marvel games is particularly useful with all of the different sized fighters and all sorts of unique attacks across the rosters that may not be fully transparent about their range and utility.
As far as we can tell, this is the first time MvC will have the feature officially besides the PlayStation Vita version of Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3, which had a hitbox viewer for replays.
The Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection didn’t include this feature, but the later Capcom Fighting Collection did in a post-launch update.
To this day, official hitbox viewers are exceedingly rare in fighting games, and despite all of the tools something like Street Fighter 6 gives you, that’s still something missing.
The MARVEL VS. Capcom Collection is so COOL! Not only do we get a jukebox of all of these amazing songs…
– Enhanced practice mode with hitbox/hurtbox AND save state ability!
– Rollback netcode (hopefully across all titles)!
– Game art resources and the arcade marquees cards pic.twitter.com/oIpvjiqaTM— Mark Julio 『マークマン』 (@MarkMan23) June 18, 2024
Besides that, the new MvC collection also features a music player, gallery, quick save states, one-button special options, and more Training Mode inclusions like block, throw recovery, safe fall, and Advancing Guard settings (though there looks to be plenty more they haven’t shown yet).
Plus there’s of course rollback netcode with lobbies that look to be largely the same as the Capcom Fighting Collection, so hopefully this means it’ll be there for all games and have some more advancements too.
We’re just wondering if there will be bonuses like the challenges in the de-listed Marvel vs. Capcom Origins collection or of course crossplay.
The new collection includes X-Men: Children of the Atom, Marvel Super Heroes, X-Men vs. Street Fighter, Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter, Marvel vs. Capcom, Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and The Punisher seemingly all using their arcade versions.
Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics is set to release later this year on PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and PC, and we’ll likely be learning more about it in the coming weeks and months.
