It’s impossible to predict it all, but there’s certainly a lot going on behind the scenes in the world of Capcom fighting games right now. Developers have begun to figure out how to stave off leaks more effectively than in recent years, and Street Fighter and Marvel vs. Capcom communities have been repeatedly hit with exciting pieces of news over the last few months.
Shuhei Matsumoto, producer on both Street Fighter 6 as well as the upcoming Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection recently sat down with VG 24/7, and when asked about the potential for particular Marvel vs. Capcom 2 characters to resurface, he gave a real ear-perking response.
The initial question concerned just three unique characters introduced in Marvel vs. Capcom 2: Ruby Heart, SonSon, and Amingo. These Capcom originals were the only three MvC2 cast members not to hail from a previous game or property, and thus have a somewhat special place in MvC history.
With so much MvC momentum in the air right now, VG 24/7 asked specifically about the possibility of these three ever returning. Matsumoto could have given a safe “maybe” and left it at that, but instead suggested more specific potential.
“Yeah, there’s always a possibility,” Matsumoto starts. “This is actually a great opportunity for us, because when we do release this collection, there are going to be a lot more people who’ll be able to familiarize themselves with the characters who only appeared in these versus series.”
“If there are enough people who are interested in these characters, then who knows? Maybe there is a chance they could appear in Street Fighter 6 or another fighting game,” he finished.
This is an exciting thing to hear a producer like Matsumoto say in any context, but right now it’s especially so as we’re seeing old barriers broken and new possibilities abound. First of all, Street Fighter 6 is soon introducing its first ever non-Capcom guest character, SNK’s Terry Bogard, opening the door for other such happenings in the future.
The hype for Marvel vs. Capcom never truly died, but has certainly been in low gear ever since 2017’s Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite flopped. The announcement of the MvC Fighting Collection immediately rejuvenated the fan base and naturally considerations surrounding the potential for a Marvel vs. Capcom 4 began circulating.
This same spirit was stirred last month in yet another VG 24/7 interview with Capcom developers when Street Fighter 6 Director Takayuki Nakayama brought up the idea of Mortal Kombat’s Sub-Zero joining a Street Fighter roster.
Through all of this the subtext seems to be both intuitive and consistent: if there’s enough of a response from fans, developers are at a place where crossovers and new titles are on more on the table than ever before.
