Marten de Roon posts hilarious ‘holiday photo’ as Atalanta midfielder pokes fun at football’s social media generation

Marten de Roon has hilariously poked fun at his fellow professionals by posting ‘a holiday photo’ on his social media.

The Atalanta star, who is known in England for his time with Middlesbrough in the 2016/17 season, is renowned for being one of the more light-hearted footballers on social media as he pokes fun at himself with comical images and captions.

The Netherlands international was in fine form once again as he made a light-hearted jibe in the direction of other players in the game.

With the world’s biggest football stars sharing images of themselves lounging on a sun bed or dining at a fancy restaurant during their summer holidays, De Roon offered a much more home-spun version of such images.

Taking to social media, he posted an picture of him playing for Atalanta poorly photoshopped onto picture of a beach with palm trees.

The post was captioned: “My management told me to post a holiday photo so my Instagram wouldn’t look formal with all professional photos.

“So: lovely holiday time. Can’t wait to get back and start the new season!”

To say that his followers enjoyed the post was an understatement.

While being a social media sensation in his spare time, De Roon certainly isn’t just a one trick pony.

After joining Middlesbrough for £12million in 2016, the midfielder made 34 appearances for the club in a season that saw them suffer relegation from the Premier League.

Since then he’s been with Italian side Atalanta, where he’s regularly featured in the Champions League, as well as helping the club to third spot in Serie A in 2018/19.

In addition to his club form, De Roon has also represented the Netherlands on a regular basis. He has 28 caps for his country, playing alongside the likes of Virgil van Dijk, Frenkie de Jong, Donny van de Beek and Memphis Depay.
