Manchester United find themselves in one of their worst Premier League performances to date, ending 2024 in 14th place with Ruben Amorim at the helm.
The Portuguese manager arrived at Old Trafford in November as a successor to Erik ten Hag who was sacked from a lack of results despite spending £600 million on transfers over two and a half years.
Now, Amorim is attempting to fit the current squad into his 3-4-3 system in a bid to return the club back to their former glories.
Unfortunately the club are struggling to adapt to the new manager’s playstyle, with a run of four straight losses now heading into the first game of 2025.
United are set to take on league leaders Liverpool at Anfield, with Arne Slot’s men eight points clear with a game in hand.
However, United’s decision to appoint Amorim is now believed to be a U-turn from their previous consideration of the Portuguese manager.

Manchester United didn’t want Ruben Amorim
TalkSPORT has now reported that United turned down the opportunity to appoint Ruben Amorim in the summer.
The rationale for this earlier rejection is reported as being concerns of the current squad not being able to fit into his play style.
This decision is one that Alex Crook believes is costing the club, contributing to their poor results. The lack of consistency experienced by backing Erik ten Hag only to replace him with Amorim has cost the squad chance to comfortably get used to a new system.
Speaking about the issues and pressure on the players fitting into Amorim’s system, Crook commented: “That’s on INEOS then, isn’t it?”
He continued: “They did pre-season with one manager playing one style of football – not that we ever really knew what it was – then they spent a load of money to get players suited to that manager before firing him.
“Also, I know this for a fact, that ownership were offered Ruben Amorim in the summer when they were doing a beauty parade of different managers.
“They were speaking to Roberto De Zerbi, Kieran McKenna, Thomas Tuchel and they said no to Amorim because his style didn’t fit this Man United squad.
“They then hired him X amount of weeks later. It doesn’t fill you with confidence, does it?”
United are now faced with no funds for the winter transfer market, meaning that Amorim will be relying on sales to get finances for any new transfers to fit the new system, only adding more concern to what the second half of the season looks like.
