Whilst United are looking to overhaul the squad this summer, their transfer budget is somewhat limited.
The Red Devils have got a total of between £40 million and £60 million to work with, putting a pressure on sales before they can pursue their key targets.
Recently United released a shortlist of priority sales they’re looking to complete this summer to help raise funds.
Their current priority cull list is made up of Victor Lindelof, Harry Maguire, Casemiro, Christian Eriksen, Antony, Jadon Sancho and Mason Greenwood.
The Premier League club are hoping that the sale of these seven players can raise close to £200 million for transfers.
However, with no sales having been completed as of yet, United’s hands are tied which poses a problem with the deal for Joshua Zirkzee close to completion.
Whilst the £34 million release clause could be triggered by United in the existing budget, The Guardian have reported that the club are hesitating on going ahead with it.
By paying the release clause for Zirkzee, United’s budget will plummet, causing a stall in transfer business until the Red Devils can sell on an existing player.
The report explains that the new sporting director, Dan Ashworth is leading the decision on the best course of action.
United are seemingly on the brink of their first sale of the summer, with Mason Greenwood looking likely to join Marseille, although the details of the deal are unknown.
No doubt the Greenwood deal will be factoring in on Ashworth’s decision, so we may be about to finally see some movement with United this transfer window.
