The first half saw both sides trade chances without either goalkeeper being truly tested.
It wasn’t until captain Dan Gore earned a free-kick just outside Villa’s penalty area that United broke the deadlock.
Mather’s precise curling effort kissed the inside of the post before finding the net.
Villa returned from the break with renewed energy and equalized through Bradley Burrowes, who converted a cross from close range.
However, United’s determination shone through as Ethan Wheatley earned a penalty after being brought down by Villa’s goalkeeper, and Mather made no mistake with a composed finish from the spot.
Despite heavy pressure from Villa in the closing stages, the young Reds defended resolutely to claim all three points.
The game also marked a significant moment for one of United’s brightest young talents.
