Links between Manchester United and Viktor Gyokeres have been building since Ruben Amorim took over at Old Trafford back in November.
Gyokeres is easily one of Amorim’s biggest successes from his time at Sporting, taking a striker from Coventry City and making him one of the most in-form strikers in Europe.
As such much of the football world are expecting a reunion for the pair, with Gyokeres even saying previously he wants to join United.
However, with Gyokeres being so in form, with 34 goals and seven assists in 33 games, and with a contract until 2028, Sporting are in a really strong position to negotiate for their star striker.
With United’s current financial struggles, securing the star with an agreement with Sporting will be no mean feat, but plans are reportedly already underway to seal the signing.

Marcus Rashford paved the way for Viktor Gyokeres
It’s now been revealed that an initial part of the plan to land Viktor Gyokeres revolves around Marcus Rashford’s move to Aston Villa, or rather, the move to not replace him.
Rashford is now at Villa Park for the remainder of the season, saving United the vast amount of his wages for the rest of the campaign.
As it looked increasingly likely that Amorim was not going to be using the star, his £325,000 per week wage would have been spent by the club to not even be sat on the bench.
However, this has now created some capacity in the budget, with the option still remaining for Villa to buy him for £40 million at the end of the season.
Another bonus for United is that with Amorim reluctant to Rashford even on the bench, there’s nothing to replace logistically, meaning the spending that would have been done on a replacement can now be set aside for Gyokeres in the summer.
This has been outlined by The Independent’s journalist Miguel Delaney, as reported by TeamTalk, who wrote: “It’s well known Marcus Rashford is angling for a move to Barcelona, but there was some surprise at one major club over his loan to Aston Villa as they were under the impression that he wanted to test himself abroad.”
He continued: “Ruben Amorim had the full backing of the Manchester United hierarchy in offloading him.
“The club did not replace him with any forward – but then it could be said they weren’t playing him anyway – and the thinking there is that Sporting’s Viktor Gyokeres is in place for the summer.”
Now, all that remains to be seen is if United can move for Gyokeres before another top European club snaps him up, with the Sweden international having plenty of potential suitors.
