Manchester United decided to sack Erik ten Hag this afternoon.
Ruud van Nistelrooy will become interim manager while the board look for a long-term replacement.
United want an elite manager to take on the permanent role, with names like Julian Nagelsmann and Xavi being discussed as potential suitors.
However, the club are aware that finding a top coach in the middle of the season is a tough task.
They have accepted the possiblity that they may be restricted to managerial free agents.

Therefore, United’s hierarchy have not ruled out a formal approach for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, according to Manchester Evening News.
Due to spend around £17million in compensation after Ten Hag’s sacking, senior figures are worried that they may struggle to buy a coach out of their contract.
For example, Nagelsmann’s contract with the German national team expires in 2026, meaning United would have to pay him two years worth of wages if they wanted to bring him to Old Trafford.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has not managed a club since he left United in November 2021 but is now under consideration for a return.
It has not been revealed if United want the Norweigan to replace Ten Hag as a long-term managerial option or if he will join as a backroom staff member.
If it is the latter, he will join his former team-mate Ruud van Nistelrooy in the dugout, who he holds in high regard.
Solskjaer has previously stated that the Dutchman is the best finisher he has ever played with.
‘Later on, playing with Ruud was nice. Ruud’s the best finisher I played with, by a mile,’ he said.
For a man that has played with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney and Eric Catona, this is certainly high praise for United’s new interim manager.
