Manchester United are planning a surprising move for one of Sporting’s biggest rivals as Ruben Amorim plots his first signing.
Amorim is adjusting to life at United, playing with line-ups to find his ideal first-team fit at Old Trafford.
With a 3-2 win over Bodo/Glimt in the Europa League this week, the Portuguese manager will have been happy with the performance. Especially with Rasmus Hojlund, who’s brace and assist secured the victory and Man of the Match award.
However, Amorim is still keeping an eye on the transfer window to bring in reinforcements if needed.
Amorim swore off raiding any Sporting players in January as he left his former club, wanting to respect the team he’d built for the rest of the season.
However, he made no promises of Sporting’s rivals, Benfica.

Manchester United look to Tomas Araujo
The Sun have reported that the new manager is reportedly looking at Tomas Araujo, a rising-star in Benfica’s defence.
The 22-year-old is a product of the Benfica academy now breaking into the first team.
Back in 2022 the centre-back went out on loan to Gil Vicente where he made 26 appearances, grabbing a goal and two assists to help the side to a 13th place finish in the league.
Upon returning, Araujo primarily sat on the bench, until this season where he’s broken in to the first team.
At 6 ft 2, Araujo’s commanding presence, strength and impressive passing ability make him an ideal centre-back for Amorim’s system.
Araujo’s made 13 appearances so far, helping Benfica hold a 3rd place slot in the Liga Portugal, 14th in the Champions League and are still in both of Portugal’s domestic cups.
However, the defender is contracted until 2028, giving Benfica a strong position of power when negotiating.
Amorim is set to met with the United executives today, Friday 29th November, aiming to discuss a move for Araujo this January.
It’s expected that United would need to part ways with £50 million to sign the star who could be set to replace Harry Maguire, Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof who are set to leave at the end of the year.
