Reports indicate that Manchester United scouts have been attentively following Castelo Lukeba’s performances at RB Leipzig this season. Their interest has been sparked by the young defender’s notable progress.
According to BILD, Manchester United is showing keen interest in Lukeba due to his exceptional development. This interest from Manchester United signifies a shift in their strategy, focusing on emerging talents rather than solely pursuing established, high-cost players.
Lukeba, aged 20, is experiencing his inaugural season with RB Leipzig following his transfer from Lyon. A product of Lyon’s academy, Lukeba made his first-team debut in 2021 under Peter Bosz and also played when Laurent Blanc, a former Manchester United player, was at the helm.
RB Leipzig, known for their strategy of acquiring Ligue 1 talent, as seen in their signings of Dayot Upamecano, Christian Nkunku, and Ibrahim Konate, secured Lukeba’s transfer for around £28 million. This acquisition was partially funded by the £78 million sale of Josko Gvardiol to Manchester City, as reported by AP News. Additionally, Lyon is entitled to 20% of any future sale of Lukeba.
In his current season at RB Leipzig, Lukeba has appeared in 10 out of 11 league matches, contributing to the team’s fourth-place standing in the Bundesliga. He has started in eight of these games, scoring once.
Lukeba’s partnership with Mohamed Simakan, another promising French defender aged 23, has been a highlight. His impressive performance at the club level has led to his recent debut in the senior France national team, following his leadership as captain of the under-21 team with 14 caps.
RB Leipzig’s sporting director, Max Eberl, expressed his enthusiasm about acquiring Lukeba, stating on their official website: “Castello Lukeba was our number one target for the centre-back position. We have been interested in Castello for a while now. His style of play will fit perfectly into our side and he will be a key part of our squad. Despite being just 20, he’s already developed a lot and is one of the most talented young defenders in Europe.”
Marco Rose, the manager, also holds Lukeba in high regard, suggesting he has the versatility to even play as a left-back if needed.
