Manchester United’s squad is in the middle of a significant tactical reshuffle under Ruben Amorim.

The team, constructed under Erik ten Hag for over £600 million, was built to operate in a 4-2-3-1 system.

Amorim, however, has brought his trademark 3-4-3, demanding a shift in roles and responsibilities across the pitch.

One of the most noticeable adjustments comes on the flanks, where Amorim’s system prioritises the use of wing-backs.

This transition has exposed a glaring issue at left-back for United.

Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia both have patchy injury records.

This has forced United back into the market for a long-term solution.

While high-profile targets such as Alphonso Davies, Theo Hernandez, and Patrick Dorgu have been linked, United have opted for a promising talent to bolster their future options.

Cerro Porteno’s teenage left-back Diego Leon is set to have his medical next week as he is set to join United, according to report from Daily Mail.

United will pay £3.2 million upfront for Leon, with further bonuses included in the deal.

The agreement between both parties was made in December.

The Paraguayan defender, who made his senior debut in August, has already signed the necessary paperwork but will remain at Cerro Porteno until June.

FIFA rules prevent him from officially joining until he turns 18 in April.

Leon’s rise has been rapid but impressive.

He scored the winner in his debut match and made 18 appearances before Paraguay’s domestic season concluded in November.

Despite his limited experience, United’s South American scout Giuseppe Antonaccio recommended the move.

Technical director Jason Wilcox played a pivotal role in securing the deal.

Although Leon’s arrival signals promise for the future, he is unlikely to feature immediately in Amorim’s plans.

A stint in United’s youth setup or a loan spell seems the most probable next step as he acclimates to English football.

United’s decision to act quickly secured Leon’s signature ahead of rival interest from Arsenal and Manchester City.
