Boy – have things escalated quickly for Dan Ashworth.
Courted by Manchester United for so long, the former FA Director of Elite Development has left the club after just five months at the club.
It’s a remarkable fall from grace.
Ashworth was seen as a vital pillar of the new INEOS regime.
After the club were implored to bring in ‘best in class’ to United, Dan Ashworth was seen as an ideal candidate within that remit.
Joining Newcastle United in 2022 after making his name with both England and Brighton & Hove Albion, Ashworth was seen as a major backstage figure in the game.
When news broke that Manchester United wanted him just two years after he joined Newcastle, the courting process had begun.
Once Ashworth made it clear that he wanted to join The Red Devils, The Magpies put him on gardening leave for nearly 6 months while they negotiated his departure from St James’ Park to Old Trafford.
Alas, the relationship between Manchester United and Dan Ashworth hasn’t worked out.
It is believed that Ashworth has had issues at United since day one.
And now the club have made it official.
Manchester United have released an official club statement on the matter.
“Dan Ashworth will be leaving his role as Sporting Director of Manchester United by mutual agreement.
“We would like to thank Dan for his work and support during a transitional period for the club and wish him well for the future”.
A rather short and sweet statement from the club there.
What is interesting is the choice of the phrase ‘mutual agreement’.
That tends to lead to a suggestion that both parties were happy to part ways at this juncture.
If that’s the case, then it seems that it wasn’t working out on the side of Dan Ashworth as well as the club.
Whatever the case may be, the chapter of Dan Ashworth as Manchester United Sporting Director is now officially closed.
