Manchester United have now received a massive boost in the pursuit of one of their top January targets, courtesy of Real Madrid.
United have been prioritising the signing of a quality left-back to replace Luke Shaw on the left flank.
The England international is prone to injury, having been ruled out on and off for over a year now.
As such, United are keen for a replacement to fit into Ruben Amorim’s new system as a left-wing-back.
Yesterday the news was dominated by the reports of The Red Devils targeting Cerro Porteno’s Diego Leon.
In one day, United had entered advanced talks for the 17-year-old and by the end of the night, a pre-contract agreement was verbally in place for Leon to move to Old Trafford in June 2025.
However, Leon was not United’s primary left-back target.
That slot is firmly for Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies.

Manchester United battle Real Madrid for Alphonso Davies
The Canadian defender is out of contract in the summer, meaning he’s eligible to line up a free transfer in January.
While Bayern are still fighting to keep their star and extend his contract, Davies’ agent is unhappy with how the German club have dealt with things.
As such, United and Real Madrid who were both waiting in the wings are now being entertained by Davies’ entourage.
Now, Goal has reported that Real Madrid are losing hope in signing the left-back.
This has given United a massive boost, with no other clubs reported in the running to sign the world-class defender.
If United can secure Davies, he’ll be a strong option to have down the left-wing, and as a free transfer, it’s an absolute steal.
