Manchester United have been dealt with a huge transfer blow in their quest to rebuild and strengthen the defence.

Man United are looking for new faces to add to their squad since the start of the new season and bring forth a renewed style of play.

Consolidating defensive depth and solidity has been one of the key aspects behind The Red Devils’ transfer interests in recent windows.

Signings such as that of Matthijs de Ligt, Leny Yoro and Noussair Mazraoui have bolstered the defensive structure and have provided more options to choose from for the manager.

However, one area remains overlooked and United have attempted to cover that before but could not derive the expected dividends.

The left-back position in the Man United formation is a source of worry as players natural to play that role like Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia, who joined three seasons back, have been unavailable for a long time.

While Shaw has proven to be injury-prone for quite some time over his United career, Malacia has also ended up with the same fate after missing the whole 2023-24 season.

As per recent reports, Manchester United made significant enquiries in securing the potential signing of Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies.

The Canadian international’s contract expires in the summer of 2025 and this made him an attractive option for United as they could land a top player without digging in their transfer funds.

However, things have changed on the Davies front for Man United and any other club competing for his signature.

According to an update by Florian Plettenberg, Bayern have almost agreed on a contract extension with their star left-back.

Alphonso Davies has made significant salary concessions to stay with The Bavarians as a long-term deal is being discussed between the club and the players representatives.

While the seal is yet to be put on the new contract, Manchester United are said to be aware of the recent developments.

Alongside The Red Devils, Real Madrid were exploring a free transfer with a much bigger salary for the 24-year-old.

It now seems that the race to sign Davies on a free transfer is coming to an end.
