Manchester United stars have recently taken a stand regarding their LBGT+ plans ahead of their match against Everton this weekend.
The Red Devils have made massive steps over the recent years to support and promote the LGBT+ community to develop a welcoming environment for staff and supporters.
Throughout the “rainbow laces” period during the last two seasons, Premier League sides have been asked to support the LGBT+ community. United players have always gone a step further, wearing a pride-themed training shirt to wear for warm up before the game. A similar concept jacket has also been worn when walking out for the game.
However, this year, the planned walk-out jacket was scraped only hours before the game.
The Athletic have now reported that new signing Noussair Mazraoui reportedly was not prepared to wear the jacket, citing his Muslim faith as the reason.
With Mazraoui rejecting the jacket, the rest of the team decided to also decline to wear the jacket, showing solidarity with their teammate. This move was reportedly done to avoid Mazraoui being seen as the only one refusing it.

Manchester United states the refusal to wear LGBT+ jackets
Manchester United have since issued a statement about the decision, commenting: “Manchester United welcomes fans from all backgrounds, including members of the LGBTQ+ community, and we are strongly committed to the principles of diversity and inclusion.
“We demonstrate these principles through a range of activities, including support for our Rainbow Devils supporters’ club, and campaigns to celebrate our LGBTQ+ fans and combat all forms of discrimination.
“Players are entitled to hold their own individual opinions, particularly in relation to their faith, and these may sometimes differ from the club’s position.”
Now, The Rainbow Devils, United’s LGBT+ supporters’ group established in 2019, have responded, commenting: “We respect the right of this player to have his own views, whilst also feeling disappointed that he put the rest of the squad into a position where they felt that they couldn’t wear their jackets. We also worry what kind of negative effect this incident might have on any player at the club who may be struggling with their sexuality.
“Rainbow Devils will continue to work with Manchester United to support inclusivity, through the One Love initiative and others, as we all continue our work to ensure all LGBTQ+ people feel safe and welcome at Old Trafford, both on and off the pitch.”

Noussair Mazraoui’s recent criticism
This isn’t the first time that Mazraoui has faced criticism for failing to support LGBT+ causes.
Back in May 2023, whilst playing for Bayern Munch, the right-back faced backlash after supporting his fellow countryman, Zakaria Aboukhlal.
The Toulouse star had refused to take part in the Ligue 1’s rainbow campaign, with Mazraoui offering support on Instagram.
In response, Bayern Munich fans responded by showing off a banner reading: “All colours are beautiful. In Toulouse, Munich and everywhere. Respect our values Mazraoui!”
