Hours after Dan Ashworth and Co delivered the news, he flew back to his home town Oldenzaal to reunite with his extended family.
He released a heartfelt message to United fans last week but has not spoken to the media since leaving Old Trafford.

Bruno Fernandes took responsibility for the Dutchman’s exit and mentioned that he apoligised to him after he was sacked.
‘It is not good for anyone at the club when the manager goes,’ he said to Sky Sports.
‘You have to take some of the blame on yourself because it is the team that is not doing so well and it is easier to get rid of a manager than 15 players.
‘I spoke to the manager and apologised. We are not scoring goals and I feel responsible.
‘I normally score a lot of goals but I always give 100% and he is aware of that.’

As well as the club captain, other United players reached out to Ten Hag on WhatsApp to send him their best.
Many stars took to social media on the day the news was announced, including Kobbie Mainoo and Alejandro Garnacho.
Mainoo wished Ten Hag well and thanked the manager for handing him his debut.
‘Thank you for your trust and belief in me and for giving me the opportunity to play for my boyhood club. I wish you all the best for the future,’ he said.
Similarly, Garnacho wrote a positive message to Ten Hag, noting that he will remember the success they shared at United.
‘It hasn’t gone as well as we wanted, but I will remember the good times we had together and I wish you all the best in the future. Thank you very much, Erik,’ Garnacho said.
