Ruben Amorim is assessing how his new Manchester United squad fits the favoured system that brought him success at Sporting Lisbon.
With five trophies in four years, Amorim is extremely confident in his style of play. The Portuguese manager led Sporting to their first league title in 19 years, completely changing the landscape of the club.
Whilst Erik ten Hag was often criticised for his lack of identity on the pitch, Amorim is very clear about the style he wants his team to be playing.
Amorim’s approach is much more central, with dynamic wing backs being key to his attacking play.
As such this is a key area of the squad that needs to be addressed, especially on the left-hand side.
United were having issues with the left-back role anyway, with Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia out injured. The pair have been side-lined for the vast amount of last season, continuing through to now.
However, with Amorim, much like ten Hag, relying on Diogo Dalot to cover the left-back, and fitting Luke Shaw in as a left-sided centre-back, a new signing could well be inevitable.
Florian Plettenberg has now reported that this is the case, with the left-back role being Amorim’s main priority in the transfer market.
Manchester United look to Bayern Munich and AC Milan
Whilst Alphonso Davies of Bayern Munich is United’s favoured option, the competition against Bayern and Real Madrid could be too much to focus on.
The Red Devils have already offered Davies a “blank cheque” to choose his wage to try and outbid the other European giants.
However, as a precautionary measure, United are still scouring the European market for other options. In their search, United are looking to AC Milan and their captain Theo Hernandez as a backup option.
Plettenberg has reported that United are closely monitoring Hernandez who’s contract runs out in 2026. Whilst this means there’s no chance of a free transfer being negotiated, Milan is in a strong seat of negotiation. However, with just over a year on his contract, Hernandez may be open to a move away from the Serie A side.
Hernandez is a key member of the AC Milan squad, making 14 appearances with two goals and two assists, routinely wearing the captain’s armband.
