Manchester United have unveiled their designs for their new stadium set to replace Old Trafford as the home of the men’s team.
Billed as “the Wembley of the North”, the venue is set for a capacity of 100,000, making it the biggest stadium in the UK.
With backing from the UK government into the plans revitalising Trafford Park, turning it into a hub of innovation for sport, leisure and culture, United are keen to get the development underway.
Recent concept designs have revealed the stadium covered by a glass roof, showing the vast fan area of the development.
The proposed build times are setting out for the £2 billion stadium to be completed in time for the 2030/31 season, giving a five year timescale.
Now, United are looking to the next steps of the plan, naming the stadium.
Sky Sports have revealed that a lot of interested has already been generated in naming right for the ground.
Previously a renaming of Old Trafford was predicted to generate between £15 million and £20 million per year, however the potential backlash from fans in renaming such an iconic ground could have been significant.
As such, with United’s new home set to be a blank canvas, there’s no historic weight of an existing name.
Already it’s been reported that “investment and sponsorship interest has been through the roof” since United unveiled the plans of the new stadium.
It’s understood that the club’s existing sponsor Snapdragon are keen to get in on the action, with their intention to bid for the naming rights already tabled.
Whilst it’s not reported what this bid is valued at, it’s expected to be around the same value of that of Old Trafford.
