Manchester United have received a blow in their pursuit of one of their key left-back targets.
The Red Devils are searching for a replacement for Luke Shaw who has once more found himself injured.
The England international has been sidelined for the majority of 2024, only making cameo appearances before suffering another injury.
As such, Diogo Dalot has been covering the left-back role, with Tyrell Malacia also out injured.
With the position posing a problem for Erik ten Hag for most of last season, it came as a surprise to most that United didn’t sign another left-back this summer.
Players like Fulham’s Antonee Robinson, Rayan Ait-Nouri of Wolves and Milos Kerkez of AFC Bournemouth were all considered options for the role.
However, nothing materialised. Now, United’s recruitment team are determined to sign a new left-back to fit into Ruben Amorim’s new system.
The club recently sent scouts to Italy to watch Lecce’s talented young left-back, Patrick Dorgu.
Manchester United begin scouting Patrick Dorgu
Dorgu has made 15 appearances this season, with three goals to his name. The 20-year-old went on loan to Lecce back in 2022 from Nordsjaell, with the Italian club making his move permanent a year later.
With comparisons being made between Dorgu and Gareth Bale, Lecce is braced for several offers for the Denmark international.
However, Gazzetta dello Sport has reported that Lecce’s technical director, Panteleo Corvino, has ruled out a move for Dorgu in January.
Corvino commented: “Dorgu is a potential champion. Correction; he is [already] a champion.”
He continued: “He runs for three [men] and sees the goal. He has a motor that no one else [can match].”
“A player like that has admirers, of course. And, for him, there are certainly many, even abroad. But Dorgu will stay here and then, in the summer, we’ll talk about it because his destiny is set.
“The future belongs to him.”
