Back in 2014, some of Manchester United’s class of 1992 bought shares in neighbouring team Salford City FC.
United legends Nicky Butt, Gary Neville, Phil Neville, Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs all bought 10% shares of the club, with David Beckham joining them later down the line.
Then over the summer, Gary Neville became the majority shareholder after acquiring Peter Lim’s stakes in the club.
However, the League Two side has now lost one of the United legends from their senior role at the club.
Salford City has officially lost their Chief Executive Officer, with Nicky Butt stepping down from the role.

Nicky Butt stands down as CEO of Salford City
Butt joined the club in the CEO role back in 2022, replacing Gary Neville, however, has now resigned as he can’t “dedicate the time required” to the role.
Speaking to the club’s website, Butt commented: “Whilst I have enjoyed the day-to-day responsibilities of the Chief Executive role and discovered a huge amount about the challenges an EFL club faces away from the football pitch, I have recently realised how much I miss the coaching and development of players.”
He continued: “This has increased my desire to get back into that side of the game. Over the past few months, there have been several exciting opportunities put forward to me that have put my focus back on coaching and on the grass. That being said I have always wanted to put Salford first.
“And we now have experienced executives within the senior management team here which means that I can step away from my current duties without any impact on current operations and it will be very much business as usual.”
In the interim of appointing someone else to the role, the current finance director, Jonathan Jackson will be taking up the role.
