With the January transfer window only a day away, Manchester United could be set for a very quiet winter.
The club are experiencing real financial pressures, United’s co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe having to make some extremely unpopular decisions to support the club.
To ease the pressures from Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR), Ratcliffe has made decisions to make 250 staff members redundant, sack Sir Alex Ferguson from his role as the club’s global ambassador, scrap concessions on ticket prices and cut the club’s funding to several affiliated associations.
Responding to the cuts, Ratcliffe has commented: “I know we get criticism in the press, but we do need to challenge the cost of running this club because what I want to be free for us to do is buy really good footballers, not spend so much of the money on infrastructure. We can’t run a business at a loss, which is where United have been in the last couple of years.”
As such, it’s been expected that United would have a limited budget for the upcoming transfer window, with the club’s hierarchy urging Ruben Amorim to focus on player development within the current squad.
However, Manchester Evening News has no revealed the true extent of the budget that Amorim has at his disposal.

No budget for Manchester United in January
New manager Ruben Amorim reportedly has no budget for the January transfer window.
Speaking after United’s loss to Newcastle when asked if he would be making any signings in January, Amorim commented: “We don’t have that possibility in January.”
He continued: “You know the situation better than I [do]. It’s not the case I am not arriving here and I can spend a lot of money, changing all the team. You know the situation so it’s not a point to talk about it.”
The decision to withhold any funding for transfers comes as United spent £206 million in the summer on signings to fit Erik ten Hag’s system, bringing his total transfer spending to £600 million in two and a half years.
With very little to show for it, United are now forced to makes sales if they wish to make any signings next month.
Over half the squad are reportedly up for sale for the right price, with the Saudi Investment Fund setting their sights on Casemiro and United hoping to get £40 million for want away Marcus Rashford.
With Amorim’s hands tied, United fans shouldn’t be hopeful for any ground breaking signings in the coming month.
