Today it was announced that Manchester United are set to increase their ticket prices for next season in a bid to increase revenue at the club.

The club is set to increase the price of season tickets by five per cent, the same increase that has taken place for the last two years.

Alongside this increase, The Red Devils are also looking at implementing a structured tier system of ticket prices for non-season-ticket holders, with the cost of the ticket depending on the club United are playing against.

Presumably, the other teams considered as the Premier League’s big six would fall into the top bracket, whilst newly promoted teams will be the cheapest tickets available.

However, regarding the increase for the season tickets, The Athletic has now revealed that the club were initially tabling a much higher increase.

Manchester United initially wanted a much higher increase to season ticket prices

Manchester United were reportedly looking at putting the price of season tickets up by 20% in a bid to ease the club’s financial pressures.

However, this was strongly opposed by an extensive consultation including the Fans’ Advisory Board (FAB), with the Manchester United Supporters Trust also damning the decision.

The FAB was established after United’s attempt at joining a European Super League back in 2021 which ultimately failed, with the group now having significant engagement with the club and direct communication with Sir Jim Ratcliffe and Omar Berrada.

Ultimately United decided to back down from the 20% increase to settle at 5%, with the smaller increase still looking to bring in £15 million according to sources close to the situation.

Putting the initial rise into context, teams like Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United have already announces a price freeze for next season, whilst Newcastle and Brighton & Hove Albion have announced 5% rises, the same as United’s eventual decision.

Arsenal have announced a rise of between three and five per cent, whilst third place Nottingham Forest have announced a 8.5% rise, still 11.5% less than United’s initial proposal.

If 20% didn’t seem like an astronomical rise, in comparison to other clubs it’s certainly clear that this suggested rise was ridiculous, especially with the recent performances of the club.
