Last month saw Manchester United take on Fenerbahce in Istanbul in the UEFA Europa League.
Unfortunately The Red Devils couldn’t do enough to secure a win, with the game playing out to a 1-1 draw. However, the game was a lot more exciting than the score-line suggests.
Christian Eriksen opened up the scoring in the 15th minute being set up by Joshua Zirkzee, with United entering half-time in the lead.
However, Jose Mourinho worked his magic with the half-time team talk, with Youssef En Nesyri scoring only four minutes into the second half with an assist from Allan Saint-Maximin.
Then, the second half descended into chaos.
Eight minutes later and Jose Mourinho was shown a red card, sending him to the gantry behind the dugout. This dismissal came from his reaction to Manuel Ugarte’s tackle on Bright Osayi-Samuel being ignored with no interest of checking it with VAR.
Diogo Dalot kicked the ball out of play to allow for Osayi-Samuel to be attended to, still on the floor, whilst the fourth official was trying to calm the home team’s bench. Ultimately the referee Clement Turpin had seen enough and gave The Special One his marching orders.
But this wasn’t the end of the drama.
Just before the end of the second half, Antony went down injured after only being on the pitch for 16 minutes, having to be stretchered of having injured his ankle.
However, it didn’t end here.
Manchester United’s issues with UEFA after the Fenerbahce fixture
After the game, United fans were contained within the stadium for two hours, with fans reported as being “treated like animals”. The majority of fans were funnelled through a single-file exit when they were ultimately allowed to leave.
Now, The Daily Mail has reported that United are in talks with UEFA around the treatment of their supporters.
Whilst holdbacks are common for fans of British clubs when playing away in Europe, this was extreme with The Red Devils raising complaints on behalf of their fans.
This isn’t the first time it has happened with United in Istanbul as a similar situation played out after United’s 3-3 draw to Galatasaray in the Champions League last season.
