Manchester United are now ‘exploring’ extending the contract of captain Bruno Fernandes before the end of the summer, a well-placed source has revealed to centredevils.

Fernandes, alongside his compatriot Diogo Dalot, is currently on vacation following their participation in Euro 2024 with Portugal.

Centredevils understands, United are “confident and relaxed” about Fernandes’ future with them, despite links to Saudi clubs and PSG.

While a move this summer is completely out of the question, United are wary of next summer when Fernandes would have just one year left on his contract, potentially forcing a sale at a reduced price.

It is understood United aims to open discussions with Fernandes regarding a new contract as soon as he returns from his holiday.

Although the exact length of the proposed extension is still under consideration, United are prepared to offer him an improved financial package.

One possibility includes extending his current deal by an additional year.

The club views Bruno Fernandes as an indispensable asset.

His performance in the 2023/24 season, where he scored 15 goals in 48 appearances across all competitions, underscores his importance despite United’s overall challenging campaign.

Since his £67.6 million transfer from Sporting Lisbon in January 2020, Fernandes has firmly established himself as United’s leading figure, amassing 79 goals in 233 appearances.

The negotiations will be closely monitored, especially given previous reports that Fernandes seeks not only a better financial package but also assurances that United will remain active in the transfer market and strive to compete for top honors.

There is a strong hope among fans and club officials that Fernandes will sign a new contract, continuing his vital role as both a leader on the field and an influential presence off it.
