Back in August of 2020, LOSL Lille playmaker Angel Gomes turned down a contract offer and opted to leave citing displeasure over the lack of enough game time under then manager Ole Gunnar Solsjkaer.
Born in London, Gomes came through United ranks before gaining promotion to the first team in July of 2019.
Over the course of the year between first team promotion and his departure, he only made 10 appearances so suffice to say his displeasure was justified.
The decision to let him go was termed as a mistake by many as it was clear as day the immense potential and talent he possessed.
He soon joined Lille but was loaned out for the 20-21 season to Portuguese outfit Boavista where he registered 12 G/A in 32 appearances.
He then returned to Lille where he has been impressively plying his trade across the 3 midfield positions excelling best at the 10.
This season, he has contributed 2 goals and 10 assists across all competitions in 44 appearances and it would seem United have taken note and acknowledged it was a mistake to let him go
According to TEAMtalk, The Red Devils are reportedly spying a shock deal to bring Gomes back to Old Trafford but they face stiff Premier League competition.
“Man Utd chief Sir Jim Ratcliffe clearly feels his predecessors, alongside Solskjaer, did not do enough to keep Gomes at Old Trafford and will now try to rectify that issue by adding him back to the senior squad,” the report reads.
According to the report, Aston Villa, Tottenham and West Ham United are all credited with strong interest for the English playmaker so snagging a deal will be difficult.
Gomes’ deal runs out next year so if Lille were to let go of him, the time is nigh.
Lille have been trying to get him to sign a new contract but are not making headway so chances are they may make peace with losing him this summer lest they lose him for free next.
