It feels like Viktor Gyokeres to Manchester United is a matter of when rather than if.
The striker moved from Coventry City to Sporting back in 2023 for £20 million, with Ruben Amorim being the main reason for his decision.
Gyokeres truly thrived under the Portuguese manager, grabbing a total of 66 goals and 23 assists in 68 games.
These vital contributions helped Sporting to win the Liga Portugal in 2023/24 as well as winning the Golden Boot for that campaign.
Now, the Sweden international has reportedly announced that he wants to follow Amorim to Manchester, having “his heart set” on continuing his career with his former coach.
Amorim swore against a raid for any of his Sporting stars in January, commenting: “In the January market I will not [get players from Sporting], that’s what I said.”
However, he then added: “In the summer I don’t know anymore. First point: to hold out until the summer. Sporting’s players are very good players. I don’t know. We’ll see.”
He later went on to reference Gyokeres specifically, commenting: “It was tough for me to leave, if I start joking about that with Gyokeres, I’ll have problems. This is my city, this is my country, I will respect.
“Viktor has to stay until the end of the season and then his life is going, maybe, somewhere else.”
This collection of comments left the door firmly open for Gyokeres to join him in Manchester next summer, with Florian Plettenberg now confirming as such.
The Sky Sports reporter has confirmed that United have now initiated “concrete talks” about signing Viktor Gyokeres next summer. United want to strike a deal, however, will need to make sales first to generate the funds to make it happen.
However, they face opposition from bitter rivals Manchester City, with Hugo Viana, Sporting Lisbon’s sporting director pushing the pursuits of Gyokeres.
