Manchester United are set to battle it out with Barcelona in their pursuit of a recent league title-winning defender.
The Red Devils are now preparing for life under Ruben Amorim, remodelling their squad ready for his new tactics.
In preparation for starting with the club this week, Amorim has already expressed his opinions on some of the squad. The Portuguese manager claimed that he has no interest in using Victor Lindelof, with Harry Maguire also out of contract next summer.
This leaves Lisandro Martinez, Leny Yoro and Matthijs de Ligt as his only centre-back options going forward.

Naturally, the club are looking for options to reinforce the defence in line with his normal 3-4-3 formation including three centre-backs.
Now, it’s being reported that in their search for a strong centre-back, the club are facing a race with Barcelona to secure one of their top choices.
Manchester United and Barcelona declare interest in Jonathan Tah
Reports from Spain are now claiming that the LaLiga leaders are looking to rival United in their pursuit of Bayen Leverkusen’s Jonathan Tah.
Tah is out of contract in the summer and so is free to negotiate contracts with other clubs as of the 1st January to line up a free transfer.
As such, reports from Fichajes have claimed that the pair of European giants are facing off to try and secure a move for Tah in the summer.
Tah has had an impressive run under Xabi Alonso at Bayer Leverkusen. The defender was a key member of Alonso’s Bundesliga-winning side in 2023/24.
So far this season, the Germany international has made ten league appearances with one goal. His contributions have helped Leverkusen to fourth place in the league, nine points behind league leaders, Bayern Munich.
This isn’t the first time United have been interested in Tah though. The Premier League side turned to the defender when negotiations for de Ligt appeared to stall over the summer.
Now, with United running short on options, the club are renewing their interest in former targets. However, Amorim could still look at utilising some of his full-backs in his back three.
