Prescribed burn Monday
Cal Fire-Butte County plans to conduct prescribed burning operations on the Loafer Creek LLC Vegetation Management Project beginning Monday. The location of the project is south of Limpach Road, south of Cohasset.
Crews are closely monitoring the weather, and if conditions allow, they will complete multiple burn units over several days. Smoke will be visible from many parts of Butte County while burning is taking place.
This vegetation management project is part of broader strategic efforts to protect the local community and nearby natural resources.
Butte County’s residential burn suspension remains in effect, in accordance with section 4423.2 of the Public Resources Code where Cal Fire may issue restricted temporary burning permits when it can be shown that burning or use of open fire is essential for reasons of public health, safety or welfare.
Airport hub for Cal Fire
With summertime heat beginning to subside, the Chico Regional Airport maintains its position as a regional firefighting hub in 2023, according to a city press release.
Chico Airport Manager Tom Bahr noted the airport joins 13 other airports in the state that serve as air tanker bases in servicing aerial firefighters. Beginning in July, the airport assumed a leading support role in heavy air-attack operations, ranging as far north as the Oregon Border, by hosting Australia-based Coulson’s 737 “Fireliner” and Portland, Ore.-based Erickson’s MD-87 Tanker, among several other air tankers on contract with the U.S. Forest Service.
