Man Sets Fire to Building During Hours-Long Standoff with Police – BROOKLYN FREEDOMNEWS.TV

August 08, 2024 BROOKLYN, New York – A disturbed man was taken into custody after an hours-long standoff with various NYPD units in Brooklyn on Thursday, officials said.

According to police officials, just before 5 p.m., officers responded to 911 calls of a man threatening to light a fire inside a building at 2204 Fulton Street.

Specialized police units used a saw to gain entry where the man was barricaded only to find that the possible squatter had ignited a blaze.

Dense black smoke could be seen spilling out of the basement of the building almost overtaking first responders.

Surrounding buildings were evacuated by police and families with small children could be seen running out of neighboring homes. 

One firefighter and civilian suffered injuries considered non life threatening during the incident, FDNY officials said.

The suspect was transported to Brookdale University Hospital Medical Center for evaluation following the three-hour standoff at a Fulton Street building near Eastern Parkway in Ocean Hill neighborhood.
