January 12, 2025 BRONX, New York – A 32-year-old man allegedly wielding a knife was shot by police in the Mott Haven section of The Bronx Sunday evening, cops said.
According to NYPD officials, a knife wielding man approached officers, who they gave verbal commands to drop the weapon. That’s when police say the suspect allegedly quickly approached officers armed with knife and police opened fire.
The wounded suspect was rushed by EMS to Lincoln Hospital with non life threatening injuries. Two officers were also hospitalized for tinnitus.
Detectives recovered a knife at the scene of the police shooting that occurred at around 5:38 p.m. at 335 East 148th Street.
Reportedly the man shot was the person who called 911 to report someone trying to steal an air conditioning unit from an apartment window. The 911 caller went outside with a knife to confront the thief before returning to his apartment. That’s when police encountered the man and a language barrier may have played a role in an officer using their service weapon.
This incident marks the second time NYPD officers were involved in shooting a suspect over the same weekend.
On January 11th, a 50-year-old man was critically wounded during a shooting involving four NYPD officers after the armed male allegedly pointed a gun at the members of service in Brooklyn on Friday evening.
According to officials, four officers patrolling in Canarsie responded to the sound of gunfire near Flatlands Avenue and E 80th Street.
Upon arrival officers witnessed a man exiting a convenience store at 776 E 80th Street and immediately start running northbound.
The officers gave chase on foot and by vehicle while identifying themselves and instructing the individual to stop running. The suspect however continued running and took cover behind a tree where he allegedly pointed a gun at a uniformed NYPD sergeant, cops said.
Four officers discharged their service weapons, striking the suspect multiple times in the torso. He was rushed to Brookdale University Hospital in critical condition where he remains in police custody.
Detectives recovered a firearm, along with a ghost gun inside the store where the gunfire originated.
The investigation into the shooting incident reported at around 9:45 p.m. in Canarsie is ongoing.
