It’s been around one week since Terry Bogard and the new balance update dropped for Street Fighter 6, and the top players have been going in hard trying to figure out what the state of the game looks like now.
Longtime pro VARREL|Mago just put together his full tier list for SF6 now after taking Terry all the way up to Legend rank online and going through his current thoughts on the cast.
It seems that the “2D God” has a solidified top 3 fighters in his mind now after the latest patch with a pair of them being a couple of the DLC we’ve been seeing a lot in tournaments lately.
Mago ends up putting Ed at the very top followed by Cammy and M. Bison as the only ones he feels qualify for S tier now.
Interestingly, Saishunkan|Nemo recently dropped his new tier list too with the boxer in first place, so it seems like that may be a pretty common sentiment among top players in Japan at the moment.
That doesn’t really come as much of a surprise, however, when SNB|Momochi, BST|Fuudo, Sasamo, SNB|Yamaguchi, and BC|Tachikawa have all been getting mostly good results at Street Fighter League Pro-JP 2024 this season.
Following that, he has more powerhouses up in A tier like Rashid, Akuma, Zangief despite his changes and interestingly JP, who’s been a lot more quiet in the competitive scene compared to last year.
One of Mago’s placements that stands out is putting Luke all the way down in C rank between Ryu and Lily though we’ll get into more of his reasoning in a bit.
He’s also got two characters at the very bottom of E tier with the first being Marisa.
The other is actually Terry.
Nemo also had Terry fairly low on his rankings too, but seeing him in last place here is pretty surprising considering how the latest DLC was looking before release.
We don’t have his full breakdown as to why Mago feels this way about Terry at the moment, but he did bring up a few points about his normal attack options not being the best.
He also wishes there were better things to go into and use after Burn Knuckle while Crack Shoot is also tricky to use effectively.
He says doesn’t know who is weaker for sure, but doesn’t think it’s Marisa right now.
For some more context, however, on how these tiers were crafted, Mago seems to be approaching these rankings based purely on the highest level of competition and Legend-ranked online play.
It may be a bit obvious to some, but Mago says the strength of a character changes depending on the rank range.
Marisa, for example, can be strong all the way up to around 1,600 or 1,700 MR points, but after that she struggles because the players are good enough that they have their own win patterns established and don’t make enough mistakes to let her get the big punishes anymore.
Similarly, he could put Luke up in like A tier for most rankings since he is fairly easy to win with overall, but claims it becomes very hard to do so trying to fight opponents above the 1,900 MR point.
So while Terry’s damage output and ability to convert, especially with meter, could potentially carry him pretty far, Mago doesn’t feel like he has enough to handle the top of the mountain currently.
This is all after one week, though, so we’ll see if opinions change at all once more players get to use the Fatal Fury star in tournaments.
