Manchester United have lacked a reliable, quality left-back for nearly two years.
This absence has disrupted Ruben Amorim’s tactical plans.
Luke Shaw’s recurring injuries have compounded the issue.
Tyrell Malacia’s struggles post-injury have left United short of options.
Diogo Dalot has been deployed at left-back and left wing-back despite being a natural right-sided player.
Amorim has been open in admitting Dalot is better suited to right flank but has had no alternatives.
The Portuguese coach is pushing for reinforcements in January.
However, signings depend on player sales due to PSR constraints.

Luke Shaw could be a surprise departure this winter.
Reports from Napoli Calcio Live suggest Antonio Conte wants Shaw at Napoli in January.
Shaw is reportedly not part of Amorim’s long-term plans.
Napoli and United maintain strong relations after Scott McTominay’s summer move.
Conte sees Shaw’s versatility as a valuable asset.
Shaw can operate at left-back or in a back three.
Shaw’s versatility and physical presence would very much suit Conte’s style of play.
When fit, Erik ten Hag regarded him as “the best left-back in the world.”
However, persistent injuries have derailed Shaw’s career.
The 29-year-old had made just three appearances this season.
He has missed 25 games already this season, adding to last season’s 30+ absences.
United need to plan for life without Shaw moving forward.
Napoli could offer him the ideal exit and fresh start.
A January sale would also benefit United in being able to recoup valuable funds.
If United are to recruit smartly, INEOS will need to acquire a left sided player who isn’t proven to be injury prone.
The Red Devils are however, set to resign Alvaro Fernandez from Benfica.
It may well be perfect timing for the club to replace Shaw with a fresh and hungry left-sided player, which Fernandez may well prove to be.
Amorim is in need of results in the short and long-term.
Failure to bring in players who he can consistently rely on will only hamper United’s trajectory.
It is clear that the 20-time English league champions need to look past him and Napoli could offer him the perfect exit route.
Shaw’s market value stands at €20 million according to Transfermarkt.
INEOS would do well to earn as much from a sale.
