The fighting game community would not really be where it is today without Martin “Marn” Phan, and right now he needs all of our help.
Marn has reportedly been hospitalized in serious condition for over a week now and is in significant need of assistance with his growing medical care costs after losing his health insurance.
His close friend and fellow longtime FGC member Sherry “Sherryjenix” Nhan recently shared the news as well as started a GoFundMe campaign on behalf of Marn and his family in Vietnam.
According to her post, Marn had gone to the hospital to get checked out after not feeling well when things suddenly took a serious turn.
“Marn ended up in a medically induced coma to help his body recover from a serious bacterial infection called Melioidosis, causing him to have pneumonia. He was put on a ventilator to help maintain his oxygen levels while sedated with 30+ other medications. They found many underlying conditions while he was infected, including early kidney disease, indicating diabetes.”
He was reportedly laid off from his job and lost his health insurance, which has left his family unable to cover his growing medical care expenses.
Sherry states that after 8 days of treatment, Marn’s hospital bills totaled over $8,000 USD and set a fundraising goal of $20,000 to hopefully cover that plus his continued hospitalization as he battles the infection.
Marn has been involved with the FGC for two decades going all they way back to Guilty Gear XX and pioneering Tatsunoko vs. Capcom in the West and showing how busted characters like Zero were.
He also fought hard to become one of the best competitors in Street Fighter 4, becoming famous for his Dudley, as well as Marvel vs. Capcom 3.
Marn continued to compete at a high level in Street Fighter 5, Guilty Gear Strive, Dragon Ball FighterZ, Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite and Street Fighter 6.
On top of his player accomplishments, Marn has worked hard to grow the FGC in the competitive space and the eSports scene as well as League of Legends.
Everyone at EventHubs wishes Marn a speedy and full recovery as well as sympathies to his family during this extremely stressful time.
At the time of reporting, Marn’s GoFundMe campaign has raised nearly $12,000 with more information being available on the official page.
