Live updates: More than 30 firefighters tackling ‘severe’ fire at former Walsall care home

A severe fire has broken out at a former care home. The blaze has taken hold of a building in Walsall.

Fire crews are currently at the scene in Slaney Road, in the Pleck area of borough. West Midlands Fire Service say more than 30 firefighters are at the scene.

The fire service says the building is ‘void’. The fire has taken place on the ground floor of the property.

Crews from Aldridge, Walsall, Willenhall, West Bromwich, Perry Barr and Tipton have attended. West Midlands Fire Service tweeted: “Over 30 fire fighters are currently dealing with a severe fire in the ground floor of a void residential care home on Slaney Road, Pleck, Walsall.”

It is not yet clear how the fire began. Slaney Road is located off Bescot Road.

It is not far from Ikea Birmingham and Gallagher Retail Park, which are located on the opposite side of the M6, which runs nearby. We’ll keep you updated on this story with our blog.
