It’s not a Tuesday
Street Fighter was one of the first video games to kick off the Hollywood adaptation trend (and also find financial success doing so), which Capcom seems to be trying to recapture the magic of soon.
Despite recently losing its directors / filmmakers, the upcoming Street Fighter live-action film now apparently has a release date.
According to a new report from Variety, Street Fighter is currently sitting on a domestic launch date of March 20, 2026, which is quite a bit sooner than we were expecting given the production setbacks.
Moreover, Sony will now apparently be distributing the movie with Legendary and Capcom still co-producing the project.
This news surprisingly comes less than two weeks after brothers Danny and Michael Philippou reportedly dropped out of the co-director chairs in a move that was said to be mostly due to scheduling conflicts.
As things stand now, however, there are no other names publicly attached to the new fighting game movie in terms of either the director or the cast.
The only thing concrete we’ve seen come out of the project so far is a simple poster that basically just copied the same logo from the games.
With a release set for less than two years away, production would presumably need to begin pretty darn soon, so perhaps quite a bit more work is already underway behind the scenes.
There is of course the very real possibility too of delays as well.
After pushing their other franchises for new adaptations like Resident Evil, Monster Hunter, Dragon’s Dogma and soon to be Devil May Cry, it’s not much of a surprise that Capcom would want Street Fighter to return to the silver screen again.
The original 1994 movie starring Jean-Claude Van Damme, Kylie Minogue, Ming-Na Wen and Raul Julia was made on a budget of around $36 million yet managed to gross around $136 million for the developer.
Moreover, Capcom reportedly said in their most recent shareholders’ meeting that the Street Fighter film still brings in tens of millions of yen every year even after three decades.
There obviously isn’t very much to get excited about yet, but we’ll be learning much more about with Legendary and Capcom have planned for Street Fighter in the coming months.
But before that, fighting game fans have Mortal Kombat 2 coming to theaters in October 2025.
