Lisandro Martinez is an absolute rock in the heart of Manchester United’s defence.
The Argentinian has enjoyed a new partnership with Matthijs de Ligt, finding a rhythm together that could transform the United back line. Ruben Amorim is set to enjoy the pairing.
Amorim favours a 3-4-3 formation with his squad, using centre-backs across the back line, almost guaranteeing Martinez and de Ligt slots in the first squad. With one more slot available, Leny Yoro, Harry Maguire, Jonny Evans and Victor Lindelof will be set to fight for their place in the line-up.
However, Martinez isn’t only valued by United, but also a talisman to his national side of Argentina.
The 26-year-old was set to be on international duty in Argentina’s World Cup 2026 qualifiers, however, this hasn’t gone to plan.
The centre-back suffered an injury in United’s 3-0 win over Leicester, affecting his lower back.
Martinez travelled to Argentina ahead of the side’s matchups with Peru and Paraguay, however, was ruled out following further medical assessments.

It’s now been reported by Manchester Evening News that Martinez has defied United, but to the club’s benefit.
Lisandro Martinez returns to Carrington
The report explains that whilst United permitted Martinez to remain in Argentina with the national squad, Martinez had other ideas.
The centre-back has instead chosen to return to Carrington to focus on his recovery under Ruben Amorim.
His early return to Manchester not only allows for him to meet with his new manager much sooner, but also allows for further tests to be done.
With further assessments yet to be carried out, the full extent of his injury is yet to be known, however, United will be hoping he won’t be yet another long-term injury to add to their list.
