Lions Clubs International, Lions Region 4 & 5, District 404A2 Nigeria have renovated as well as donated new set of seats and signage at the Diabetes Center Outpatient Clinic of the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, Calabar, Cross River State.
Speaking during the presentation of the items to the Management of the Hospital, the District Governor Elect, District 404A2 Nigeria for 2020/2021 Lions Service Year, Lion Elder Sunday Eloma MJF, NLCF, FCA, noted that the gesture is part of the organization’s coporate social responsibility to improving humanity and providing succour to the needy.
He expressed hope that the renovation of the Diabetes Centre and provision of new set of chairs will enhance the standard of care and attention given to diabetic patients who seek medical care at the hospital.
Receiving the items, the Chief Medical Director (CMD) of the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, Prof. Ikpeme A. Ikpeme, who was represented by the Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee and Consultant Orthopedic Surgeon, Prof. Ogbu Ngim who was accompanied by the Deputy Chairman, Medical Advisory Committee and Consultant Nephrologist, Dr. Emmanuel Effa, thanked the Lions Clubs International, District 404A2 Nigeria for their selfless service to humanity and particularly, the Lions Diabetes Centre at the University of Calabar Hospital which he noted was built and donated to the hospital by Lions Club, District 404A2 Nigeria.
He assured the Organization and indeed the general public that the Management of the hospital will ensure the sustainable use of the facility, adding that the facility has eased the accommodation problem that use to occasion the Medical Outpatient Unit where diabetic patients come to receive care.
The CMD further informed that the diabetic centre, which also has facilities for eye checks has gained international recognition and acceptance.
Speaking in an interview, the Region 4 and 5 Chairpersons, Lion Dr. Bassey O. Bassey NLCF and Lion Alice Okon NLCF both noted that the gesture was imperative in order to ease the stress of diabetic patients who hitherto spent long time in cues in order to receive care. Mentioning that a Special Lions Club (Calabar Blue Circle Lions Club) has recently been registered with Lions Clubs International to be responsible for maintenance of the Lions Diabetes Center, fundraising and sensitization of the Community on Diabetes
Also speaking, the Leo District President, District 404A2 Nigeria, Leo Asuquo Bassey 100%P, LAH also noted that the donation of the items as well as renovation of the facility are part of efforts of the Lions Clubs International, District 404A2 Nigeria to ensure the continuous functionality of the Diebetes Centre.
