Purpose
The primary purpose of a library assistant is to assist in the provision of library services. This may include circulation, interlibrary loans, training and information management tools acquisition, and cataloging.
Minimum Experience
NQF 6 Diploma in Library & Information Science.
Minimum two (2) years of working experience in an academic library, preferably in higher education environment.
Recommendations
A Bachelor's Degree in Library and Information Science in Library & Information Science or an equivalent library qualification with 1-year relevant experience in higher education will be an added advantage.
Experience in Computerized circulation systems (e.g., ALMA) and Discovery tools (e.g., Primo, EDS).
Duties and responsibilities
Information resources
Issue, return and renew books and journals on a computerized circulation system.
Help with interlibrary loans.
Assist with new books processing.
Shelve books that were used by the students.
Consultation
Assist students with information queries face-to-face, via chat service, telephonically, and electronically.
Training
Provide one on one information information-searching skills for undergraduate students.
Assist information librarians with students’ orientation and training.
Information processing tools
Help students with the use of information management tools such as discovery tools, Libguides and reference management tools.
Library space
Assist students with the booking of venues in the library.
Health and Safety
Adhere to health and safety rules and procedures.
Participate in library health and safety initiatives
Personal/Professional Development
Engaging in ongoing professional development activities, such as attending conferences, workshops, and webinars.
