Aare Onakakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams, has urged the Federal Government to ensure that the security architecture of Nigeria is restructured following the recent financial autonomy granted to local government areas.
Adams, during a leadership retreat of Odua Peoples Congress (OPC) held in Osogbo, capital of Osun State on Friday, said financial autonomy should pave the way for security restructuring because LG’s have money to fund security.
He noted that once the security architecture of the country is restructured, the challenges associated with protection of lives and properties will be guaranteed.
Quoting him, “Even though we have three types of government: the federal, state, and local governments.
“All this means each government must have its own security; the federal government should have its own security; the state must have its own security; and the local government must also have its own security. Especially now that the federal government has fought for the local government to have their autonomy, they have more than enough resources to have their own local government security.”
He added that there should be devolution of police operation where federal, state and local governments will have their own police, saying “by this it’ll be like a miracle; the issue of insecurity will come down drastically.”
The State Coordinator of OPC, Yemi Aboderin said, “Recently there have been different cases of kidnapping and other crimes, and Osun State is not exempted from this. It is our duty to make sure that as a group we ensure adequate support in enhancing security in the state.“
