Lecturer/Senior Lecturer/Associate Professor/Professor: Pathology – Department of Paraclinical Sciences
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The successful candidate will actively participate in the following areas:
- Undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in veterinary pathology;
- Experiential training of undergraduate and postgraduates in veterinary diagnostic pathology;
- Preparation, presentation and review of course material;
- Lectures, seminars and tutorials, evaluation of students, student support and participation in curriculum improvement and development;
- Diagnostic necropsy and biopsy duties on a rotational basis;
- Active participation in departmental research programmes;
- Service rendering to developing communities and continuing education programmes; and;
- Administrative and management tasks as delegated by the Head of Department.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Lecturer:
- A BVSc or BVMCh degree or equivalent professional veterinary qualification;
- MMedVet (Path) degree from the University of Pretoria to be completed within a reasonable time of appointment;
- Registration with the South African Veterinary Council (SAVC) as a veterinarian;
- Commitment to develop a teaching and learning portfolio;
- Strong interest in research and potential to become an established specialist researcher; and
- Evidence of continued professional development or continued education development.
Senior Lecturer:
- A BVSc or BVMCh degree or equivalent professional veterinary qualification;
- MMedVet (Path) degree from the University of Pretoria OR a European/ American Board-Certified degree in veterinary pathology (ECVP / ACVP);
- Registered or amenable to be authorized with the SAVC;
- At least 2 years’ experience in diagnostic veterinary pathology laboratory/ institution; and
- At least two peer-reviewed paper in the field of veterinary pathology in an accredited scientific journal as senior or co-author.
Associate Professor:
- A BVSc or BVMCh degree or equivalent professional veterinary qualification;
- MMedVet (Path) degree from the University of Pretoria OR a European/ American Board-Certified degree in veterinary pathology (ECVP / ACVP);
- Registered or amenable to be authorized with the SAVC;
- Five years’ experience as a specialist in veterinary pathology;
- At least five full peer reviewed papers in accredited scientific journals as senior or co-author;
- A record of previous undergraduate and postgraduate teaching experience;
- Successful supervision of Masters students;
- The ability to attract independent research funding;
- Participatory membership of professional bodies; and
- Evidence of academic scholarship and professional national recognition.
Professor:
- An appropriate PhD-degree;
- Registered or amenable to be authorized with the SAVC;
- Significant national and international professional recognition;
- Substantial experience in research, supported by a sustained record and impact of publications in national and international accredited journals with focus on Veterinary Pathology;
- A record of previous undergraduate and postgraduate teaching experience;
- Successful supervision of several students on Masters, PhD and post-doctoral level;
- Proof of the ability to attract independent research funding;
- Participatory membership of professional bodies;
- Evidence of exceptional academic scholarship;
- Evidence of community engagement; and
- Experience in field-based research.
