It’s only been a couple of months since Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics was announced. However, that powerful image depicting a hearty handshake between Street Fighter’s Ryu and the X-Men’s Cyclops has already been etched into all of our minds.
As it turns out, this very handshake has seemingly been referenced Fortnite Battle Royale Chapter 5 Season 4 – Absolute Doom trailer. Needless to say, it’s difficult to imagine this being any other sort of reference.
In the trailer, Jonesy, the mascot of the Fortnite series, is seen dressed up as Captain America. After a scene depicting Dr. Doom, Jonesy then has a friendly greeting with someone dressed up as Cyclops along with the rest of the X-Men.
How do they greet one another? Well, it’s with the same handshake that Ryu and Cyclops pull off together in the Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics artwork.
The decision to have Cyclops in this scene was very clearly an intentional one. This time, we actually get to see Cyclops pulling off the full motion required of this sort of handshake.
It ends up being a powerful shot. Of course, the handshake then gets shown off at two different angles.
One thing that’s worth pointing is that Street Fighter’s Ryu has also made his way into Fortnite. Honestly, it’s a little disappointing that it isn’t Ryu on the other side of this handshake instead of Captain America, but it’s understandable considering how that would go against the theming of the trailer.
Of course, it certainly would be interesting if the Fortnite developers were able to implement this handshake motion as a taunt that could be performed with another player. If that somehow ends up being the case, then players should theoretically be able to recreate the shot themselves.
In any event, Gwenpool, War Machine, Peelverine, Emma Frost, Captain Jonesy, Mysterio, Shuri, and Dr. Doom costumes will be becoming available in Fortnite Battle Royale starting in September. Notably, the X-Men bundle, including Cyclops, should already be available in Fortnite Battle Royale via Chapter 5: Season 3.
Unfortunately, we still don’t have a release date for Marvel vs. Capcom Fighting Collection: Arcade Classics. Still, this little homage does remind us that the Marvel vs. Capcom series may indeed have a future.
