Lagos government advises residents to prioritise well-being

The Lagos State Ministry of Health has advised residents to prioritise their health and well-being while enjoying football matches or other intense activities.

Akin Abayomi, Lagos state Commissioner for Health, advised in a statement on Saturday in Lagos.

Mr Abayomi gave the advice following a series of reported deaths from heart attacks that trailed the Semi-Finals of the Super Eagles match at the ongoing AFCON tournament.

He advised the citizens to understand their physical limitations and consult with a healthcare professional if they have any underlying health conditions before engaging in activities that could potentially exacerbate them.

Mr Abayomi emphasised that crowded and poorly ventilated hot environments should be avoided with attention to good hydration.

The commissioner advised residents to take regular breaks by standing up, stretching, and moving around periodically to prevent stiffness and promote blood circulation.

“This can also help maintain alertness and prevent fatigue.

“Maintain good posture by sitting in a comfortable chair with proper back support and avoid slouching to reduce strain on your muscles and spine,” he said.

Mr Abayomi advised residents to be prepared for emergencies by familiarising themselves with the location of medical facilities and emergency exits at the venue and knowing how to access help quickly if needed.

“We also urge viewing centres to ensure that venues, where football matches are watched, have adequate medical facilities and trained personnel on hand to respond swiftly in case of emergencies.

“This can make a significant difference in outcomes,” he said.

Mr Abayomi advised that medical attention should be sought promptly if an individual experiences unusual symptoms or discomfort.

Super Eagles of Nigeria and Elephants of Ivory Coast will battle for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations glory when they meet in the final, set for the Alassane Ouattara Stadium, Abidjan, on Sunday, February 11.
