A yet-to-be-identified driver of a Toyota Sienna lost his life on Wednesday in a lone accident at Conoil, inward Secretariat, along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, Lagos State.
Three other occupants of the vehicle—two males and one female—sustained severe injuries and were rushed to the Lagos State Accident and Emergency Centre at Toll Gate for urgent medical attention.
Officials of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) transported the deceased’s remains to a morgue in Yaba.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), Adebayo Taofiq, stated that the driver was under the influence of alcohol and lost control of the vehicle due to excessive speeding.
He further disclosed that during the rescue operation, LASTMA officials recovered N48,200, a phone, and 15 sachets of alcoholic gin from the vehicle.
“Preliminary inquiries indicate that the deceased driver was under the influence of alcohol and lost control of the vehicle while traveling at an excessive speed.
“During rescue operations, LASTMA officials who swiftly responded as first responder recovered N48,200, phone and 15 sachets of alcoholic gin inside the Sienna car,” Adebayo said in a statement.
Meanwhile, LASTMA’s General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, extended his condolences to the bereaved family and wished the injured victims a speedy recovery.
He also issued a stern warning to motorists, urging them to refrain from drinking alcohol while driving, emphasizing that reckless and impaired driving poses a serious threat to lives and property.
