The Andalusia Lady Bulldogs punched their ticket to the basketball regionals running away to a big win over the Carroll Lady Eagles, 60-39, Friday night.
Three Lady Bulldogs shot in the double-digits, including Kionni Wright and Jaidyn Berry, but it was Kelsie Horwath who had the biggest night, scoring 24 points to lead the team and brought the fans to their feet with a half-court three-pointer as time expired on the first half.
The Lady Eagles had trouble navigating through the aggressive Andalusia defense, resulting in turnovers and falling behind early.
With the win, the Lady Bulldogs advance to the regionals at Garrett Coliseum in Montgomery where they will take on UMS-Wright Thursday, Feb. 13, at 9 a.m.
Scoring was scarce for both teams early. The game was tied at 5-5 with under three minutes to go in the first period before Andalusia jumped on top 9-5 with baskets from Berry and Horwath. Additional baskets from Destini Hourel and Wright lifted the Lady Bulldogs to a 13-7 edge after one period.
Andalusia continued to build on its lead through the second period. Wright added to the growing Andalusia lead converting on a three-point shot-and-foul before Horwath’s half-court three-pointer sent the teams to the locker with the Lady Bulldogs on top, 27-15.
Horwath came out strong to start the second half, contributing seven points in the third period as Andalusia’s lead grew to 42-24 entering the final period.
The Lady Eagles did make a run and got as close as 10 points with 5:32 remaining in the fourth period, but Andalusia quickly closed the door, outscoring Carroll 15-4 to seal the victory, 60-39.
Four players accounted for all of the scoring for the Lady Bulldogs, led by Horwath with 24. Wright finished strong with 16 points and Berry was good for 13. Hourel added seven points to round out the scoring.
With the win, the Lady Bulldogs improve to 19-5 overall on the season.
UMS-Wright comes into the regional with an overall record of 23-8. The UMS girls defeated St. Paul’s 53-31 in the sub-regional to advance.
