The Customs Area Comptroller, Kwara state Command, Hussaini Bello Ahmed, has said operatives intercepted and seized 3,620 rounds of live ammunition.
At a news conference in Ilorin on Wednesday, Hussaini, said the large quantity of ammunition was packaged in 25 packs of 25 rounds each, contained in fourteen cartons valued at N1,444,000.
He said the seizure was effected around Bukuro axis of the state command with a suspect arrested.
According to him, ” acting on intelligence report, the command intercepted a Peugeot 504 vehicle registered AP 448 AKD, on searching the vehicle, it was found to contain a large quantity of pump action cartridges suspected to be smuggled into the country.
” This epic seizure is very commendable at the backdrop of the heightened insecurity in the country. Should 3,620 rounds of live ammunition of this magnitude escape into the country and fall into wrong hands, the result will be appalling, devastating and disastrous,” he added.
The Comptroller said officers of the command will remain resolute despite the continuous attack on them in the course of performing their legitimate duties.
He cautioned perpetrators of the acts to desist as no methods or techniques go undetected by the command’s operatives.
Speaking on the revenue generation of the command, the Comptroller disclosed that N19.159b was realised and remitted to the Federation account from July 2019 to December 2021.
He added that from January to December 2021, the command generated and remitted N9.8b to the government, which surpassed the revenue generated in 2020 by N2.9b.
Hussaini, lauded the national headquarters of the agency for provision of logistics and commended the support and cooperation of other security agencies in the state in discharging their legitimate duties and responsibilities.
