Many fans of The King of Fighters 15 presumed the gameplay trailer for Team Awakened Orochi would likely be revealed at Evo 2022, but SNK went ahead and dropped the footage earlier this week, leaving a further announcement up in the air.
In the latest episode of Harada’s Bar, however, KOF15 Producer Yasuyuki Oda basically confirms that SNK is indeed “preparing something” to show off at the big event next weekend.
After some more talk about which regions can top Evo, Oda is asked pretty bluntly if they’re going to have anything to announce.
“We’re preparing something,” said Oda coyly in response to the question about Evo announcements. “We’ll say something.”
Harada goes on to say that he feels the developers are facing extra pressure this year to show something special, and the SNK Producer seems to agree.
“I can tell there’s some tension,” said Oda. “But I feel this time is a little better than before.”
Harada feels like it’s harder for him to attend offline events now because fans are going to have heightened expectations for announcements, which is apparently why he didn’t go to Combo Breaker this year despite originally planning to do so.
“We’d like to do what fans expect at the expected time, but it’s hard. The reason for that is we need to read between the lines from an industry perspective” – Katsuhiro Harada
Both developers wouldn’t say for certain whether they’ll be at Evo or not.
“We’d like to do what fans expect at the expected time, but it’s hard,” said Harada. “The reason for that is we need to read between the lines from an industry perspective.
When a company announces something at a certain time, we should avoid running into each other with announcements. There’s a balance to consider.”
Harada jokes that maybe they’ll reveal a Tekken 4 Remake or something to throw everyone off, but Tekken player / commentator Genya asks him not to do that.
Obviously, Oda isn’t going to spoil what SNK is planning to say / reveal at Evo although it’s still pretty easy to narrow things down to just a few options.
We’ll almost assuredly receive a concrete release date for Team Awakened Orochi, who are due out sometime in August, and there’s still 1 more DLC team to be released sometime this autumn too.
So there’s a very good chance the next trio gets at least teased on the finals stage if not more or perhaps a new bonus character like Omega Rugal.
SNK are also the odd ones out in terms of not having an official pro circuit right now alongside Capcom, Bandai Namco and Arc System Works, so we may also see the return of the King of Fighters World Championship tour as well.
You can check out the full Harada’s Bar episode below where the developers further discuss how they think Evo will go this year under Sony’s management as well as how they’re feeling about offline vs. online tournaments right now / in the future.
