Mortal Kombat 1: Khaos Reigns brings back three fan-favorite legacy fighters as the first half of Kombat Pack 2. Shadowy ninja Noob Saibot and former cyborgs Sektor and Cyrax act as the first three DLC contenders available right now only as part of the new expansion (for the time being).
These returning kombatants each have a storied history spanning roughly 30 years, which means there’s a lot of inspiration to be pulled from when remaking them for the modern day. As we see more from these new fighters more surprises unveil themselves, and the most recent emerges as a reference to one of Cyrax’s classic Fatalities that can now be found within one of her new Brutalities.
Footage of the Brutality in question was shared on Twitter by MK_habit_addict. In it, we see that her bomb-bearing overhead attack can lead to a special finisher that holds a big nod to one of the warrior’s original Fatalities.
In 1995’s Mortal Kombat 3, Cyrax debuted and had a Fatality called Heli-Kopter. With it, the cyborg’s hair would spin rapidly creating a propeller effect, to which Cyrax would use to fly up off screen then come back down and chop the opponent up with the spinning tendrils from head to toe.
While this certainly seems a little silly here in 2024, the new Brutality changes things up a bit to be more, well… brutal. Instead of Cyrax turning into a helicopter and flying off, the bomb she smashes into the opponent’s head sprouts propeller blades and actually lifts her foe up into the air and off screen.
The opponent even flies up with a similar animation to the original Fatality, albeit their body is more lifeless in this case. They fly up out of view, and instead of being chopped up they explode courtesy of the bomb.
What’s cool is that Cyrax even strikes a similar win pose to the classic Mortal Kombat title after performing this Brutality.
I love this Cyrax Brutality with the nod to MK3/UMK3! #MortalKombat1 pic.twitter.com/ZIe8272dIO
