The Kano State government has paid the sum of N21m as dowry for over 300 widows, divorcees, and indigents who were remarried during a mass wedding in the state.
The new bride also went home with a set of chairs, beds, kitchen utensils, and food items.
The mass wedding, which was organised by the NANAS foundation, a pet project of the wife of the Kebbi State governor, Hajia Nafisa Idris, was held at the Gwandu Emirate Palace in Birnin Kebbi on Sunday.
Explaining the reason for the event, Hajia Idris said it was aimed at reducing the high number of divorcees and widows who lost their husbands or had failed marriages.
She also stated that it was also meant to help the poor who could not afford marriage bills, adding that they would be assisted with beds, chairs, and kitchen utensils needed to run a home.
Idris noted that it is the responsibility of the government to assist the citizenry in the best way it can, adding that the wedding will no doubt give the new brides a sense of belonging.
“My husband has said it at several public functions that he will return governance to the people, and he is doing just that through massive projects and welfare to the people of Kebbi State,” she said.
The wedding was attended and presided over by the Kano State’s famous Islamic cleric, Sheik Aminu Daurawa with local government chairmen, top politicians of the state and Hisbah officials in attendance.
The beneficiaries were drawn from the 21 local governments of the state.
